The San Luis Valley Beat the Heat BBQ is proud to partner with Square Peg Brewerks to bring a Craft Beer Tasting to the 7th Annual Beat the Heat BBQ! This will be the first year that a beer festival will be incorporated into the BBQ cook off, creating a unique event that combines some of the best craft breweries in the region with some of the best professional BBQ teams in the nation
Square Peg Brewerks is a brewery and tap house located in downtown Alamosa, Colorado. Owners Derek Heersink and Mark Martinez have set out to offer farm to tap beer utilizing barley grown by Derek himself, and malted locally in the San Luis Valley. According to Heersink and Martinez the name refers to the fact that starting a business is hard work—much like the saying, “fitting a square peg in a round hole.” The taproom, located on Main Street in downtown Alamosa offers a laid back atmosphere, varied seating, an outdoor patio, shuffleboard, and cornhole.
In 2017 Square Peg joined the Beat the Heat BBQ as the official Cornhole Tournament Sponsor. In 2018, owners Heersink and Martinez brought up the idea of a Beer Fest in conjunction with the BBQ competition, and unlike trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, adding a Craft Beer Tasting to the BBQ competition was a perfect fit.
Square Peg Brewerks will host a two hour Craft Beer Tasting during the BBQ competition on Saturday August 3 from 2 pm – 4 pm. Tickets for the Craft Beer Tasting are $20 and you’ll receive a tasting cup and UNLIMITED samples for two hours! The Chamber of Commerce Beer Garden closes at 2 pm so the Craft Beer tasting is THE way to get your hands on some delicious craft brews!
Much like the BBQ community there is comradery within the brewing community. Bringing the two together offers the opportunity to bring professionally crafted beer and professionally prepared barbeque to Alamosa in one beautiful venue. The Square Peg team invited select Colorado brewers to showcase their craft in the heart of Alamosa and theses brewers will offer samples of their signature brews to the Beat the Heat event.
Beat the Heat has a record breaking 54 professional pitmasters competing on August 3rd so don't wait to get tickets to this awesome addition to the event.
